      Frequently Asked Questions ...
What is a breathalyzer?
It is a device that you blow into to measure the level of alcohol in your blood. The purpose is to allow its user a reliable way to determine whether or not he or she is impaired.

Our portable breathalyzers are convenient, compact and easy to use, and are small enough to fit into a purse or pocket. Given the serious consequences of driving under the influence it is a very low cost, effective way, of ensuring your safety and the safety of others.

How do Breathalyzers work?
As the body is unable to digest or in any way chemically alter any alcohol that is consumed, it is absorbed into the bloodstream. As the alcohol in the bloodstream circulates through a person lungs, some of it will evaporate into the air being exhaled. It is this alcohol being exhaled which is measured by the breathalyzer.

How can the Breathalyzer determine that I am impaired?
The breathalyzer has an alcohol gas sensor (usually a semiconductor sensor or a fuel cell sensor) to measure the concentration of alcohol in your breath. The concentration of alcohol in your breath is directly proportional that in your blood. 2,100 milliliters of your breath will contain the same amount of alcohol as 1 milliliter of your blood, thus allowing the breathalyzer to calculate your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).

When should the test be conducted?
For the most accurate reading it is best to wait 20 minutes after consuming your last alcoholic drink before using the tester. Any alcohol that is left in your mouth is highly concentrated compared to the alcohol in the breath that you exhale and as such will cause inaccurate blood alcohol readings.

How do I know when I shouldn drive?
We carry three different types of breathalyzers.

The LED models have a series of three lights ?Green, Yellow and Red. If your alcohol level is too high either the yellow light will come on showing your BAC is less than 0.05% and you should exercise caution should you choose to drive or the red light will come on showing that your BAC is higher than 0.05% and you should not under any circumstances operate a motor vehicle.

The LCD model displays a face ?If the face is smiling than it is safe for you to drive ?your alcohol level is below 0.02%. If the face displays neither a smile nor a frown your BAC is between 0.02% -0.05% and you should exercise extreme caution should you choose to drive. If the face displays a frown under no circumstances should you operate a motor vehicle as your BAC is in excess of the 0.05% limit required to safely operate a motor vehicle.

The Digital models give the most specific readings in that they display in numbers what your BAC level is. If it is 0.02 or below ?you are probably safe to drive ?if it displays any numbers between 0.02 and 0.05 you should exercise caution when deciding to drive ?if it displays ant number of 0.05 or higher under no circumstances should you operate a motor vehicle

Do they require batteries?
For your convenience the models that we carry all operate on two AAA alkaline batteries which are readily available. No need to have to specially order any batteries or search for some obscure battery type.

Do they require mouth pieces?
All of our breathalyzers are self-contained units which require no mouthpiece. Both sanitary and convenient - you will never have to buy replacement mouthpieces.
